  • Purchased for $21. This is a unique Douro wine. Most of us are familiar with the vineyard and Quintas on the steep slopes that frame the Douro as it winds it's way through northern Portugal. However, Quinta do Ataíde is away from the river on a flat plain. Dark ruby, almost garnet in color. Lots of earthy notes of dusty blackberry, dried cherry, spice and mint. Really juicy acidity, which makes this a great wine for food. Medium length finish. This is a nice way to start the weekend.

  • Away from the steep slopes of the Douro Valley, Quinta do Ataide is the largest organic vineyard in Northern Portugal. This is a flat, hot terroir and it comes across in the intense style of this wine. Very deep, dark ruby in the glass. The nose is earthy and full of dried herbs, prune, blackberry conserve, spiced dark cherry along with some menthol. The palate retains a surprising amount of freshness along with intense ripe, dark fruits, raisins, dried spice and some quite chewy tannins. This is built for food and should come alive on the dinner table. The acidity keeps this vibrant and it's a great value Portuguese red.
