My first Jurancon Sec, and I really liked it. On first taste it was disappointing, reminded me of grocery store chardonnay with a bitter woody finish. But I learned my lesson about drinking this type of wine too cold. By the time it warmed up toward room temperature it was singing. Round yellow fruits, like pear and golden apple. Tense citrusy acidity (lime) with a big oily middle. I'm going to buy more.

In the early 00s I was a big fan of the wines of Charles Hours. Then arrived some vintages when I was troubled in his young wines by dry caramel notes from oak ageing towards the finish but was pleased to find that these receded with medium term ageing. This 2015 was quite brilliant on entry and mid-palate with fuller body and richer exotic pineapple tinged fruit than usual accompanied by bright minerality and moreish acidity. The problem was excessive IMO bitterness on the finish which I take to be caused by a combination of highish alcohol (14%) with residual wood tannins from oak ageing of the sort which bothered me previously. Almost very good but unbalanced by that bitterness.

Great with a smoked salmon and lemon pasta. For SURE needed to be properly chilled.
