Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Chateauneuf du Pape vs Gigondas (By me): The bouquet is still a bit reticent but shows red berries and garrigue as well as a touch of oak. On the palate cherries, red and dark berries, herbs and spices, some mushrooms and leather, good acidity and still sticky tannin. Good length. Young maturity stage now and storing for 5+ years will be no problem.

Such a youthful presentation. Great freshness of fruit. Nice acidity and solid tannins, which are just a bit drying at this point, but which add to the nice long finish. The nose is still somewhat reticent, but it shows nice sweet fruits (cherries and raspberries), some garrigue (but this is much less pronounced than it was in 2020), and some meaty notes appearing. The alcohol stands out a bit too much on the finish. This is just entering a prime drinking window. Drink now through 2032 or so.

Nose of red raspberries with a bit of sandalwood and some floral notes. Red cherry palate shows both treble and bass notes, then flows into minerals and earthy wet soil. Peppery tannins, wet coffee grounds, black cherry and notes of dates before an oak finale.

Color is young purple. A grapy fresh raspberry tart cranberry entry with dry spices and nice mid palate juicy feel. The previous tasting notes spell out tasters' differing impressions. Not my style, no varietal character, would never guess Rhone given fresh juicy grapy tastes. A 2016 which tastes like a barrel sample in 2022 says something about the winemaking so I will not fault quality.

Mostly Grenache with some Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault. 2016 vintage. The nose is not open at first. Hints of spice, some red fruits. Palate has ripe raspberries, warm but with good freshness and present tannins. Has the structure to age. Pretty long. Excellent with a bavette.
