Amazing, tremendous absolutely sensuous wine. And it is still very early on in its maturation cycle. I can only imagine what this wine will be like in another decade.

2016 Chateauneuf du Pape 99/100 point wine taste-off (and a couple of pirate Rhone wines): Fresh black and red licorice and deep cassis notes are highlighted by extraordinarily multifaceted and enchanting flavors of creosote, garrigue, spicy pine tar, celery, and railroad tie. I found this to be one of the most interesting wines of the night, both academically and flavorfully. The complexity and intricacy of the flavor-layering is next-level. Not only is this a ridiculously complete wine, it is also a, “Wait, what is this…What is going on here?!” kind of breathtaking and even unpredictable experience that bridges fun anticipation with a sheer sense of magnificence. Everything is in the right place, and the “everything” part has so much going on that there is a new flavor with every sip. Fascinating! 98-100 points.
The color is deep, purple blue. It's almost opaque. The wine is off the charts. There is a beautiful purity of fruit. The melange of fruits runs from black to deep red. The wine is mouth coating. But it is also light on its feet. The finish is seamless, remaining with you for close to 60 seconds. This is another contender for the wine of the vintage, and that's really saying something, considering how many stunning wines were produced this year. The wine is usually made from 90% Grenache, 5% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre. Only 250 cases were produced of this stunner. So, if this seems like your thing, run, do not walk to the store and grab a few bottles.

Decanted briefly. Youthful and delicious CdP with a touch of bitterness on the end that disappeared with air. Silky, seamless, and balanced.
