  • Exceeding attenuation meets viscosity. Seemingly out of nowhere, la Peyre 2014 St. Estephe conspires with clothbound cheddar to impersonate sizzling, peppered, rack rib roast. The effect is less visceral near the rind, and more dryly perfumed. On its own, this wine suggests lifecycle stages of various black berries, from seedling to oil extracts and marc. It's too mannered to stress its soil; the sleeve wears a red letter. I mowed down the the entire bottle in just a few hours—not my intention—and found myself drinking the last ounce off of the sediment. Initially 90, finished 92.

  • 1/12. Open on the same table with La Peyre's 2013 St. Estèphe—both decanted clear. 2014 is deeper in texture, chocolatey and filled with black soil. Resolute structures of ripe tannin, violets, currants, and wilted eucalyptus push forward the experience of fresh, drinkable detail. Dry, lingering gravel oil puts emphasis on the seriousness of the finish. I believe this is an immanent bloom. Check back in a year.
    24 hour later, 15 oz. in glass-lidded decanter tabletop over night, it has stretched quite a bit thinner, leaving sharply defined tannin and mineral and a counter-shade of vacancy on the finish that serves to emphasize granular herbs. Really nice poise there, of a dryness that baits the lure. Dynamic,

  • Brooding with an earthy, rustic nose of dark fruit, potting soil, mushroom, tobacco and tar, palate of black currant, cassis and blackberry, displaying notes of the bouquet as well as black licorice, black pepper and crushed rocks, grainy tannins, lengthy finish. Paired well with Pan Seared Duck Breast and Duck Fat Fried Fingerling Potatoes.
