Clear dark ruby red in colour. Notes of black cherry and licorice. Med body, med acidity, med tannins and med finish. Drank it side by side with a Leonetti Merlot from 2016 and it more than held its own. Very different wines, but given the price differential, PR held its own.

This is a cab lovers merlot: a big, rich, ripe style. There's mainly black fruits and black plums on the nose, with some herbal notes, tar and coffee as well. Similar flavours on the rich, tannic palate: it's more on the black (and blue) fruit than red fruit spectrum. Not shy at a stated 15.1%, but there is no heat or alcohol showing on the palate. Better on the cool side now and with some decanter time; some additional aging might help tame the wine a bit. Impressive in its style, somewhat Washington State-like (B+/A-).

2016 Painted Rock Merlot (Okanagan) Huge blackberry and black cherry nose tethered by a feather of leather. These fruits are full on in the taste too with a few swirls of chocolate and coffee. Oak is still predominant on the finish however. Despite a long and leggy alcohol level of 15.1%, I wasn’t left feeling hot and bothered. A big bold red that should mellow gracefully after another 4 or 5 years of bottle incarceration (or perhaps even with a slightly reduced sentence for good behaviour). Very nice now but I’d definitely give this stronger style Merlot a “longer while” furlough to make it even more elegant, and relevant to food.

More of a fruity nose than my preferred dirt smell
Good body of black cherry and a
dark color
The finish doesn’t last as long as some but solid
