  • 2016 Domaine Philippe et Vincent Jaboulet Crozes-Hermitage was elegant and mineral-laced. The developing Northern Rhone Syrah was clear and medium purple in colour with traces of fine sediments. Expressive aromas of fresh blackberry, blackcurrant and violet were judiciously complemented by black pepper and nutmeg spices. Underneath were complexities of tilted soil, black olives and crushed rock minerals.

On the palate, it was dry and verging full-bodied. Despite its medium-high level of sinewy tannin, it felt light on its feet, in part thanks to the medium level of precise acidity. Flavours of raspberry and black cherry transitioned to smoke, earth and black tea in a rather long, detailed finish. The 2015 vintage of this cuvée had more evident richness and generosity of dark fruits. The 2016 excelled in the elegance and subtle details. The 13.5% alcohol was well-integrated. The empty bottle weighed 665 grams.

The fifty-year-old Syrah vines are cultivated on soil rich in pebbles. The low-yielding old vines offer exceptional concentration and mineral impact. The must is vinified in oak vats, and raised in oak barrels for twenty four months.
