Community Tasting Notes (6) Avg Score: 88 points

  • Age has mellowed the fruit, but there’s a wood and violet character that reminds me of Bordeaux between the primary/savory stage.

The palate is unmistakably Italian with medium, bordering on medium plus acid and a distinctive bitter note I find in most Italian wines. Medium tannin.

With the wood notes and 14.5% abv, don’t come here for a classic Barbera. There’s a bit of a dissonance between the nose and palate, but I enjoyed this bottle. I would stash for another couple years before opening, it’s in a bit of an awkward faze.

  • Very ok. Ripe red fruit, some tilled earth, grilled herb and rose water on the nose. A rather simple red fruited palate, lacking complexity and interest. Medium low body, medium plus acid, medium minus finish. Pleasant wine, decent with food, but completely forgettable.

  • Deep, inky, and brilliant, reminiscent of blackberry juice. Scents of dark berries and a touch of floral raspberries, overlaid with a healthy but not overwhelming body of integrated oak—which along with a touch of leather and savory tertiary scents lends this wine a sense a maturity.

Medium acidity on the attack, berries and vanilla on the mid-palate, fine tannins on the finish are noticeable but I certainly wouldn’t characterize this wine as “tannic.”

This wine is an anatomically correct aged barbera produced in a somewhat New World style. It’s perfectly enjoyable on its own and would make a fantastic everyday dinner wine. 88+ wine on its own merits, and I’m giving the score a slight fist-bump because of its totally reasonable price.

  • Juicy plum, ripe cherry, raisins, chocolate, prunes. Very big on the nose, but medium-bodied and weaker on the palate. As indicated by the notes, it feels a bit sweet. Somewhat diluted finish.

  • 90m air and ate with a porkloin (with a cherry-thyme sauce). High acidity makes this an excellent food wine and this pairing was excellent.

Deep Ruby color. Aromas of cherry, chocolate, licorice and dust. (Assuming this was aged in oak as a result of those aromas, but I don't know for sure.)

Crisp on the palate right from the start, where citrus and rich red fruit jump out on entry. Velvety texture, medium-body. Good length, with a finish that is earthy, spicy and full of structured tannins. Perhaps a little hot, at 14.5% ABV, but overall a really lovely wine and a good value.
