  • Opened about 1 hour prior to serving. Pours a dark, vivid red. On the nose there's notes of briar, red cherry, balsamic, oak, and kitchen spices. Very big and mouthfilling on the palate, with still-young tannins. A bit volatile as it opened, this was still very fun and interesting, and quite unlike any other Barbera I've tasted.

  • Nose of reduced red berries, with some dusty, dried, rustic tones. Nicely balanced fruit, earth, touch of spice, and integrated oak. Ample acid, but certainly not as high-toned as other Barbera offerings. I find this to have an uncommon complexity compared to other producers of Barbera. It also has an appealing richness with a framework of structure to make me guess that this can only further improve with more bottle age, although presently in a nice drinking window. An attractive value at $27. Portovino Imports.
