It's huge and delicious, with just enough savory flavors and structure to avoid being a straight jam bomb. Nobody's going to confuse it with its French cousins, but damn it was fun to drink.

Wine Advocate 1000-point dinner in NYC (Gabriel Kreuther): This bottle got opened by mistake so we got to try it. Very refined, medium-bodied Syrah with balanced, red and dark fruit, licorice, raspberry. A lovely drink if you don't like your Syrah too loud.

Drank this a few weeks after arrival...knowing that it was awfully young despite its vintage because it spent 3.5 years in oak before bottling. That said, an early view is incredibly promising...
It possesses the richness one would expect from JW's wines, but a finesse and refinement that was even more surprising. This is simply extraordinary.
He challenged the good folks at Penfold's to a taste-off of any vintage of Grange head to head against his Ancient Way. Frankly I hope they accept -- because there won't be a winner or a loser, just two examples of the best that can be made in Australia.
Bravo, JW!
