  • The final bottle of this crazily great barbera is now history. At 17 yrs old, no sign of being over the hill. Still a big nose of sweet tar and dark berries and floral. Palate is earthy, leathery, dark berries, with good acidity. Moderate tannins top off the flavor profile.

  • Another wonderful bottle of this wine. It is alive and strong. No sense of being past its prime. I'm going to move the drink by date back another year. Very similar to the bottle last year that was so magnificent. Huge nose of sweet tar and dark berries and floral notes. Palate is earthy, leathery, dark berries, with a bright but deep acidity underneath. Medium tannins that just grow out of the flavors and extends on.

  • I've been amiss with this wine. I've been too conservative in rating this wine. It is one of the great Barberas of my life -- hard to decide if the 1998 or 2000 has been the greater, but in any case Bovio in the Regiaveja terroir rules the barbera world. Huge nose of sweet tar and dark berries and floral notes. Except for the color and the depth of fruit, I would have guessed it was a barolo, or at least have been confused about the big tar and floral component in this barbera. Palate is earthy, leathery, dark berries, with a bright but deep acidity underneath. Medium tannins that just grow out of the flavors and extends on and on. Perhaps this should even be closer to a 99 or 100 because it is one of the great wines I've ever had -- comparable to the greatest baroli produced, but I'm perhaps still discounting a little because it is a "mere" barbera.

  • Less potent than last bottle. May be due to glasses that were less than ideal for showing off the aromas of the wine. But still, once open for an hour, started showing some serious tar and dark berry fruit on the nose, and a chewy palate full of berries, mushrooms, with rich acidity that ends in well-integrated tannins.

  • Came roaring out of the bottle... big nose of sweet tar and dark berries. Palate is flush with earth, dark berries, crisp acidity underneath and a nice length of modest tannins. Another luscious bottle from Bovio's Regiaveja slope.
