(LES CLOS Pinson Chablis) Les Clos Dear Friends, On Saturday night, I was quite fortunate to be invited to a tasting in New York City of Chablis Les Clos - recent vintages were poured with all the finest names represented (including Raveneau, which is always worth the exercise alone). With the recent focus on Chablis, this tasting was more than apropos and it proved how worthy this wine is of the chase (it is in far greater demand than any other wine in Chablis, more than all of the other Grand Cru examples combined). If one thing stood out as a possible negative, it was the overall ripeness of the recent wines - much more so than a decade ago (not a good thing to most of the tasters present but it did not detract from the overall greatness of the wines). We found the wines more in tune with a cool, classic Meursault than to a cutting, biting region of acid and stone (which was not a negative, it was just unexpected). As a group, they still had that extra-something that separates the finest wines from 99% of everything else. They were certainly impressive and beautifully detailed with a level of breed also above both of the blind wines put in the line-up to throw us off (the only wines represented from Preuses and Valmur - both Fevre 2005). Most of us left with the impression that Les Clos represents the finest value of any Grand Cru white Burgundy, save for occasional successes of Corton-Charlemagne. Even compared to Chevalier or Batard (discounting price disparity), there was little argument which wine was preferred - Les Clos. As I usually do when spurred by a tasting event, I try to seek one of the finest examples - with Les Clos that is not easy - the vineyard is already severely allocated by every producer and it's almost impossible to find quantity of any kind. With that in advance, this offer is EXTREMELY LIMITED. Of all the wines tasted (including 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006) this wine was universally praised for it's exemplary depth of stony fruit aligned to a wide profile of sappy, full extract and minerality. It was a denser wine than the same 2004 version (it had more in common with the 2002) and was very low-priced for the vineyard. While to was not what I would consider "lithe", I still had it ranked at #6 among a group of 24 high-profile wines and it was the least expensive by a wide margin. For what is in the bottle, this wine is a bargain and it's sure to live a long and prosperous life: This parcel has impeccable provenance and will arrive in a few weeks: 2005 Domaine Pinson Chablis "Les Clos" Grand Cru (BH92) ...I also found this stash, what appears to be a great bargain at this point: 2005 Domaine Pinson Chablis "Mont de Milieu" 1er (BH91 - "Outstanding!") (compare a $35-40) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Burg6550 Burg6560
