  • Stood up for weeks, decanted off 2oz fine sediment (which was bitter even when filtered through a coffee filter). Decanted portion is clear, ruby with age-appropriate bricking; aromatic, red cherry, slight balsamic; palate is light bodied, medium-plus 14% alcohol, medium-plus to high acidity, red cherry, slight tamari; medium length finish. Well balanced, early maturity nebbiolo. Not the best vintage of Rovellotti, but excellent for 2011. 91 today, will plan to drink my last bottle sometime this year.

  • Stood up for 3 weeks, decanted off 3oz cloudy fine sediment. Light ruby, age-appropriate bricking for nebbiolo; high intensity aromatics, floral, red cherry, slight spice, excellent complexity; palate is light bodied, high tannins which are very approachable especially with food, high acidity, red cherry, red fruited, a bit of tamari, medium-high (14%) alcohol which is balanced; medium length finish. Exceptionally well balanced nebbiolo, very enjoyable now. I'll probably drink the remainder of my bottles this year. 91-92

  • Stood for a month and decanted off about 2oz of very fine floating sediment. Light ruby with slight bricking consistent with nebbiolo at its age; high intensity aromatics, some balsamic and soy, red cherry; palate is light bodied, medium (14%) alcohol, medium-plus to high acidity, tannins present but fairly well integrated, refreshing and vibrant throughout, not the most complex but easily drinkable; finish is medium length. This is a lovely and balanced Ghemme, not showing any heat from the vintage, at an early maturity and showing just the right amount of tertiary to be interesting while still vibrant and fruit-driven. In a good spot now. 92
Update: This doesn't need any air. 5 hours of decanting and it's a bit less crisp and focused. Next time just decant for sediment and it should be ready to go. (Note that this is a change from 5 years ago, as this is a bit more mature now.)
6 hour update: I changed my mind. It's not better, but it's also not worse. With food the refreshing crispness comes out again. So decant for sediment and serve, but it won't fall off a cliff and bottles can probably be consumed over the next 5 years at least.
Day 2: Definitely held up well without any notable change compared to yesterday. Not better, not worse, still incredibly balanced and drinkable. I think this is in a great spot for drinking now.

  • Much better than the last bottle. Very weak.

  • Tannins pick you up and toss you around. Typical high-elevation Nebbiolo: relatively light-bodied, strong cherry flavors with some pleasant bitterness.
