  • Wine gathering at RJ's; 4/4/2023-4/7/2023 (South Carolina): Unlike the 48 served the night before, I am reasonably certain that this is the real Vandermeulen Bottling. The fill is mid-shoulder and the cork patina and density are correct. Beautiful rich red and brown color. Expressive nose displaying rich but slightly dry warm red fruit, plum, dry cherry, cherry jam, leather, cedar, mocha, dark spices, tree bark and earth. Still showing generous red fruit, warm, soft and round, good acidity, earthy mineral, still showing a bit of tannins and a medium to short clipping finish. It is a privilege to taste the genuine 47 Lafleur. This must have been a super concentrated opulent fruit driven wine. I can easily romanticize but this should have been much better at least two decades ago. Since I am a big fan of the old sweet fruit expression, I immenstly enjoy the experience.
