  • A trip to South Africa's Coastal Region with Reni, Rainer and Bert. Day 12, Stellenbosch and Camps Bay (Cape Town). The 200ha Kleine Zalze Estate has 110 ha under wine. Kleine Zalze uses both estate grown grapes (roughly 1/3 of the production) and purchased grapes (roughly 2/3 of the production). We tasted Kleine Zalze's wines at the winery's tasting room, with our charismatic host Wayne van Rooyen.

40% open tank fermentation. 18 months in French oak, 40% new and 30% each 2nd and 3rf fill. Dark ruby colour. Black currant, red cherry, tomato, bell pepper, chocolate, spices and vanilla, with good, lively acidity, great tannin structure and superb length. A very good, fresh, medium-bodied Cabernet. Lovely spice and cedar box flavours. Very good value.

  • According to the winery, the wine is aged for 18 months in new (40%), 2nd fill (30%) and 3rd fill (30%) barriques, whereas according to the importer the wine is aged for 20 months in 2nd to 6th fill barriques. 14.5% alcohol, 6,6 g/l acidity.

Dark-toned, deep and subtly translucent cherry red color. Pleasantly clean, dry and varietally correct nose with aromas of fresh and crunchy blackcurrants, some leafy herbaceous tones, a little bit of bell pepper, light cherry tones, a hint of dark plummy fruit and a savory touch of oak spice. The wine is full-bodied, juicy and quite dense on the palate with ripe yet not particularly sweet flavors of fresh blackcurrants, bell pepper, some leafy herbaceous tones, a little bit of savory woody bitterness, a hint of chocolatey oak and a touch of licorice. The high alcohol lends some warmth to the wine while the high acidity lends good freshness and intensity to the flavors and the textural medium-plus tannins bring some welcome firmness to the mouthfeel. The finish is moderately tannic, long and quite savory with flavors of ripe blackcurrants, some crowberries, a little bit of tart red plum, light woody bitter tones, a hint of toasty oak spice and a touch of bell pepper.

A very nice, enjoyably structured and varietally correct Cabernet Sauvignon with good emphasis on ripe yet not sweet fruit, not on excessive use of oak or overdone, exuberant fruit. Although quite new world in style, there are still some lovely old world leanings here. Probably the best wine in the Vineyard Selection range and consistently a solid performer. Good value at 17,88€.
