  • California Wines (Grapes & Grains, Temecula, CA): Tasted blind, correctly identified as Petit Sirah.

Earthy and brambly, this dark wine shows cigar box and pipe tobacco to go with its dark-fruited profile. Focused flavors of cocoa, anise, pepper, and lead pencil shavings on the moderate finish.

  • A tricky grape, Petite Syrah. Quite often can be a bit monolithic. But this is a pretty nice version. Inky as the night, as one would expect. Slightly shy nose, but dark fruit there. On tasting, the dark fruits, edging towards stewed fruit, are noticeable. There's cured meats and some leather and tobacco, too. There's some oak, but pretty well integrated and not offensive. It shape-shifted a bit - very nice right after short decant, then got a little monolithic again and after about 1.5hrs became very enveloping and soft and round. I really enjoyed it at the end. A good wine.
