Fully mature, dark garnet in color with a small amount of bricking around the edges; aromas of crushed black berries and pomegranate seeds, muddled sage, vanilla, warm oak, and wet coffee grounds. The wine smells wonderful- and evolved quite a bit over the time we drank it. It gradually became a bit more open and opulent, leaning towards the sappy-sweet side of things.
In the mouth, the wine if full bodied, and mouth filling all around. Bright, sappy red and black fruits, coat the mouth with earthy- dusty tannins balancing the finish. Secondary flavors of cedar and graphite- make the wine feel almost Bordeaux-like, but there is just way to much ripe fruit and opulence in this wine- but a good effort noetheless.
I'd say drink up now.

Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Vertical Blind Tasting (5th Street Dinner Club): Tasted single blind in a Merryvale vertical. A little bit cloudy with some slight bricking. Heavy eucalyptus dominates the nose. A slight medicinal character was also apparent. On the palate, a nice beam of spicy and tart red fruit. Good acidity with some noticeable tannins. Medium length finish but seems to lose focus. I incorrectly guessed that this was the 1999. My #4 of the flight and the group's #1.

drinking perfectly with layers of flavors ranging from cherry, raspberry, earthy tones and cedar complemented by lots of acidity. a good example of a well aged cabernet - drink up and enjoy.
