  • First of all it has much of a sweet Kabinett and less of a full bodied Spätlese. Is that good or bad? Neither nor.

If you would expect a heavy sweet hitter with fruit explosion and everything going to 11, this one might be a disappointing experience for you and there are wines in Rheingau or maybe especially Mosel that will fit a lot better. But if you’re aware, that most off-dry and sweet wines of the producer are on the lighter side but extremely fresh and with nice minerals, it can be a very fine wine with food.

And this is my perspective for this note, my experience with this bottle as a food wine. So my note is not for a solo acting Spätlese, for that I would recommend to switch to a Spreitzer 303, a Weil Turmberg or for real small money a Rothenbach Doosberg. This is a look on this bottle without a care of it’s label and category.

I had it with sabzi polo ba mahi with sir torshi, a persian food and it was very delicious as foodpairing.

The wine is light in colour and has a light body. On the nose it is more mineral than fruity and it brings you sour apple like Boskop, some pear, some peach, minerals and stone and a good balance between sweetness and acidity. But with the freshness of a three years old Kabinett.

So again, I took it as pairing with the food and I enjoyed it very much. If I would have expected something else because of the label, I would have rated less high, maybe a 91 because the freshness is nevertheless impressive for over six years of age.

  • Medium bodied. Not much of a nose. Hints of apricot skin but didn’t burst from the glass. Linear on palate showcasing stonefruit; predominantly apricot. Decent acid cuts sweetness and provides balance. Hints of mineral on the finish. Lacking complexity but still a nice sipper.

  • A nice traditional Rheingau Spätlese, smooth, well-balanced, fine Riesling fruit. Not complex at all, but very tasty and drinkable.
