  • This wine wins the QPR award with one hand tied behind its back. This wine has come into its element. Black cherry with Bordeaux style character with red licorice, tobacco leaf and smoky red figs. When first drinking these wines a couple of years ago, The youthfulness of the black cherry fruit is apparent. It definitely appeared to be much more unilateral back then, and has really blossomed in the last 6 months to a year. Finishes with the faintest hint of dusty tannin. If allowed to present blind, I would put this up against a lineup of $100-$200 Bordeaux blends from the Napa Valley. Although I am certain it would not come in first place, it certainly would not come in last place either.

  • 2015 Simpatico. Is. Here. (pause for long applause). Best QPR in Napa Valley. 2015 IS the current vintage, because, well, this is meant to showcase the ability of this unique tufa-soiled winery in the Rutherford AVA. The complexity, balance, and length of this wine goes to show you that you do NOT need a million dollar lab like the next door neighbor to make a great wine. Out of the gate, this wine is a touch acidic. Then again, so was the 2014 almost 3 years ago. Dusty raspberry, black cherry, medium bodied, volcanic soil influence is noted here and expresses probably even a bit more than the 2014 did. In the middle, raspberry cola notes pop up which just about has to be my favorite note in any wine. Finishes with a sharp bite that seems to be more white pepper than black at this point. Tannins were definitely present, which softened after about 2 hours. This wine is in the stage where you still need to decant for 2 hours, but when you do, it is right in the wheelhouse. Stocked up for the summer and fall, and you need to as well!
