  • Tasted blind in VV.

Very deep and moderately opaque blackish-red color with slightly developed, figgy hue towards the rim. The nose is quite ripe and expressive with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, herbal minty notes, some cooling eucalyptus tones, a little bit of salty liquorice and a hint of savory wood spice. The wine is moderately full-bodied, lively and quite rough and angular on the palate with ripe yet savory flavors of fresh blackberries, juicy blackcurrants, eucalyptus, some toasty oak, a little bit of crushed peppercorns and a hint of blackcurrant jam. The wine is quite structured with moderately high acidity and surprisingly grippy yet balanced tannins. The finish is pretty long and quite grippy with some tannic bitterness, pronounced peppery spice and fruity flavors ranging from fresh and crunchy blackberries to sweeter, almost jammy blackcurrant tones along with a quite savory, brooding undertone of oak spice.

A surprisingly tough and aggressive effort for an Australian Shiraz Cabernet, but in a good way. The aromas and the taste isn't really my cup of tea with somewhat pronounced oak character and slightly jammy flavors, but overall this is a quite pleasant everyday wine. Perhaps even somewhat young and awkward at this point - I guess this wine could jack up its rating if it loses its baby fat and oak character as it ages. Might need to re-assess this wine in the future - seems promising. Priced according to its quality at 15,85€.
