  • A great contestant in the 2016 Swiss pinot noir battle of the bottles March 2024 at Alpenclub in Engelberg.

95 for Studach‘s 2016 Pinot noir - open for business, gorgeous nose, multiple layers of fruit on the palate and a mid-length finish. A really great wine getting into prime drinking window.
Donatsch‘s Unique 2016 a close second at 94. Great fruit as well, notably in the mouth. Just is still a bit more closed on the nose. Takes time to open up and show its sophistication. Possibly the three hours given were not enough.
Gantenbein 2016 somewhat disappointing in the flight, as still quite closed and one-dimensional in the nose and on the palate. 92 ? 93 ? This wine still needs much time.
Two runners up with Maison Carree’s Hauterive 2016 (93) and Bachtobel’s nr 4 (92-93). Both great to drink, Carree with a bit better structure and length.
Overall all great wines of a good vintage that are coming into life now and will be a pleasure to drink well into the next decade.

  • Opened two hours before dinner and served at ~16°C. On the nose red and blue berries and sour cherries, on the palate pure and fresh, medium bodied with good depth and medium+ length.

Very different and a good step up compared with the bottle we had three years ago, the rustic touch with the notes from the stems and the tannic structure are gone, it appears even more youthful now and gives a very elegant impression, 91-92. Matched perfectly with the flat iron (beef) we had. Drink now or within the next 6 to 10 years.

  • Decanted 90 minutes before dinner and still evolves in the glass. Starts with red berries, gets more towards black currant and licorice with a hint of leather with further air. On the palate medium acidity, remarkable tannin that cries for food, long finish. Already very good (90 points) but will further improve within the next few years, good price to quality relation.

  • A biodynamic single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Neuchâtel. 13% alcohol.

Luminous, moderately translucent and quite youthful ruby red color with a hint of purple. The nose feels quite dry with a pronounced streak of London licorice and spicy Pinosity along with layered aromas of smoke, some blueberries, a little bit of brambly blackberries, light sappy notes of raspberry leaves, a hint of stony minerality and a touch of old, decomposing wood. The wine is dry, fresh and somewhat sauvage on the palate with medium body and quite intense flavors of fresh cranberries, some sour cherries, a little bit of fragrant orange peel, light brambly notes of raspberries, light sappy herbal tones, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of perfumed floral character. There's definitely a touch of brett here, but making the wine just quite perfumed and complex, not funky or dull. The overall feel is very balanced and nicely structured, thanks to the high acidity and firm medium-plus tannins. The finish is quite grippy, serious and moderately long with flavors of sour cherries, some black raspberries, a little bit of peppery spice, light boysenberry tones, an exotic hint of ripe peach and a gravelly touch of stony minerality.

A very tasty, serious and very slightly wild Pinot Noir with great depth and good sense of structure. The wine isn't particularly challenging in any way, but it definitely isn't an easy crowdpleaser either. All the pieces are in right places and there seems to be nothing in excess; shows good promise for future potential. Terrific value at 33 CHF (~30€).

  • Vinumrarum, short note. Nose of red berries and earth, slightly herbal, on the palate rough tannin, good acidity, long finish with a slight bitterness. Not as elegant as "Le Lerin" from the same vintage, needs some more years to calm down (89+).
