80% Merlot (planted accidentally years before hence the non AC status) and 10% Carignan and 10% Syrah. Serious wine as always and even with decanting really needs more time. 89 will rise.

More focussed than the other Merlots, with a 'narrow' nose. Some herbaceousness - even garrigue (from the 20% Syrah and Carignan?). Despite it's richness it's never heavy. Dryish finish. Still surprisingly tannic too. A real success, especially in this vintage. Perhaps the domaine's location a little to the west of Montpellier helped them escape the worst of the rain.

(Domaine Alain Chabanon Le Merle aux Alouettes) Beautiful blackberry and blueberry liqueur nose; great body, better than the '01; medium-plus finish 90+ pts. (80% Merlot, with Syrah and Carignan)

Really enjoyable. Good structure, and very well made. Hides it's 14.5% abv very well. I hope the 2001 is as good.

Not as impressive as the 2001 but a first class wine none the less.
