Very fark in the glass. Light spice on the nose. Spiced fark fruits on the palate. Mellow tannins and just a slight crisp acidity towards tge end. Nice contrast to traditional Greek Gyros.

Retail $22. 100% Lagrein. This was the second wine from the Elena Walch brand that I tasted on a Zoom call with new CEO Karoline Walch (the namesake's daughter). The first was a Pinot Grigio from the "mothership" winery, Wilhelm Walch and the second a Gewürztraminer from the brand that Elena started shortly after marrying into the family. And she has made that brand into one of the leaders in the Alto-Adige region. This Lagrein is one of the reasons why. Quite dark in the glass; opaque, inky, on the verge of black don't begin to describe it. Dark fruit (blackberry, plum), with a heavy dose of spice on the nose, all of which transfers to the palate. Rich, balanced, bold. While I have never met Elena Walch, I imagine from my conversation with her daughter Karoline, she would be just fine with that.
Deep ruby due to Lagrein's high anthocyanins. Med aromas of red cherries, wild red berries, black plum, mediterranean herbs, blood orange, orange zest, earth and just a slight hint of mocha from partial aging in large French and Slavonian oak barrels. Dry, with med (+) acidity, med (+) alcohol (13.5%) and med tannins. Nicely balanced, with med flavor intensity and length, it is drinking well now and for the next several years. Very food-friendly, this is the winery's entry level Lagrein. It would appeal to fans of a cool climate Syrah or Merlot or Etna reds..

Lovely wine, indigenous grape from Alto Adige. Restrained nose of raspberries, with a good palate showing raspberries and plums. I felt some spices and creaminess. Good, firm finish with good acidity and mellow tannins. Went well with braised osso buco.

Merlot-esque with a bit more bite, some flavors of dark berry and baking spice but this is more an exercise in body rather than palate, with a touch of astringency on the finish to keep it from being too stodgy.
