TN: Old Cabernet and Young Mourevdre (plus two Rieslings): The last of four young Mourvedre wines served side-by-side, this was almost like a barrel sample. So much fruit that it was a bit of a shock following three more savory wines. Going back to it the next evening it was still forward, and sweetly fruity, but some additional elements started to poke through. Very surprising showing that will have me burying my other bottles for a while.

Served a little warm at first, as hot summer days are taxing the air conditioning. A quick diversion to the fridge brought it down to a normal temp (65 ish) and allowed the fruit to blossom without undue intrusion from the alcohol. A little bit sappy (hey Contra Costa!) with a firm acid core and finishing tannins. It borders on the luscious, but the structure pulls it back. Probably a lot of time to go with this one.

Not my cup of tea - and I usually love Joel's wines. Very raisiny, especially for Mourvedre, and lacking the elegance you'd find in Neyers' or Sandlands' renditions of the grape, to say nothing of a Tempier. Raisiny fruit, some garrigue, some tannin. More like $15 Spanish monastrell than the serious, complex Mouvedres I love.

Alternated between overly fruity and nicely balanced. When it was in its more balanced phases it was a delightful and complex Mourvedre/Mataro. Deep and rich, with earth and animal notes as the variety has when it's at its best. Medium finish. Definitely wish these were released a couple years later!
