Community Tasting Notes (2) Avg Score: 89.3 points

  • Nose with blackberries, some red berries (cherries and cranberries?), tar and liquorice, animal notes (a bit of meat, fur and abbatoir), some black pepper, and hints of mint. Medium boded with dark berries on the palate, prominent acidity, just a touch of bitterness, some tannins but not too prominent, and a balanced aftertaste. Drinks well now, 89 pts.

I find a tasting note from May 2010 which is surprisingly similar; the animal note was present already then. This makes me believe that this wine could be kept for several more years, but then, it is a 2005.

  • I had a rough day and really longed for a nice glass of wine. I had some Portuguese wine open (Post Scriptum), but really too oaky, especially without food, so not at all satisfying. So I opened up a bottle of F. Villard's viogniers, which was horribly corked, so my day got even worse. Without acces to my cellar I only had a tiny stock to choose from, including a nice Gruner Veltliner, but not cold and no ice; all of the other wines were red, young and oaky (eg, sandrone's barberas) , or too light given the circumstances (chermettes beaujolais vv) . My best bet was this bottle, although i feared too much oak. It made my day. This is such a nice cold climate syrah, without apparent oak. It will not score high in blind tastings and I can't attribute a very high score to it either (89-90) and it is not built for the ages, although it could benefit from medium term cellaring. However it is well made, very perfumed almost floral, dark fruit, with meaty, and smokey touches, high acid and a nice dry but ripe tannic finish. I read a tasting note in respect of another vintage referring to it as "chalky", well that's true, and I like chalky. It screams slightly rustic but wellmade Cornas. Next day, left uncorked, and still bright and pleasing. Very refreshing.
