  • Clear translucent dark red cherry color with apparent light-medium extraction to the eye. Gentle red berry on the nose with plum notes and the addition of vanilla and tight grained non-toasted oak.
The mouthfeel is light, as is the level of initial sweet red fruit extraction, which quickly fades, allowing the tannin and acid components to overpower the fruit flavor which becomes as dry as the tannin, reminiscent of a dusty Sangiovese mouthfeel. The finish shows grape skins and a quickly dispersed cloud of cinnamon, along with an astringent felling in the bottom of the mouth and along the sides of the tongue.
My wife rates this wine as an 89, but I am missing the Carneros subtlety and delicate fruit from remembered years past. I realize that this wine is second from the bottom of their more expensive offering lineup, but in retrospect, I remember the Garnet bottling to be more elegant than this Carneros example. I don’t dislike it, but I likely will not try another vintage of the Carneros. I would rate this as a disappointing 82, so we’ll split the difference and arrive at a reluctant 85.5 in spite of the 86 rating above. I also am put off by the sherrified character mid palate and on the finish. Bottle variation????

  • Another great pairing for this wine! Black beans, pork and mushrooms in an Udon Noodle bowl topped with cucumbers, yummy!

  • Average fruit, no tannins or acidity, very simple pinot.

  • Somewhat reserved, but beautiful PN character! Lots of lighter fruit and a remarkable ability to pair with unusual flavors, in this case, spicy Thai chicken with peanut sauce.
