Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Vintaged in the Barossa Valley in the 1970s. Matured and bottled in the Hunter Valley, probably in the 1980s. Sealed with a short plastic-capped cork, which came out in one piece. Pours a dark, cloudy brown.

The nose is rich, complex, and well-balanced. There are perfumed notes of rancio, raisin, and lychee. Oak contributes a background note of dark, heavy wood. There are also exotic floral notes, and a hint of fuel. The palate shows bright, sweet fruit notes of raisin, date, and rhubarb, with hints of chocolate, mint, and sage. The flavours are subtle, but there are a lot of them, and they're all pleasant. The palate shows no structure, but has enough acid and tannin to balance the fruit (though alcohol and glycerin stick out slightly). This improved in the few hours between opening and consumption, and it felt like it could still benefit from a little more opening up.
