Community Tasting Notes (8) Avg Score: 94 points

  • Rich and brawny with broad tannic shoulders. This is going to improve over the next decade but it very good now. Deep fruit, leaning toward blueberry and fig over currant on the palate, but currant and luxardo cherry on the nose. Tannins are both dusty/mature in the midpalate and still a little unresolved in the finish. Unusual. I think it needs more time. I like this a lot, but perhaps just a smidge over-extracted? Reserving judgement until 2026-7 when I’ll open the next one to check on progress.

2013 continues to be a year that I think the critics were overly enthusiastic about. Good? Certainly. Tippy-top? No. I much prefer the 2016s and 2018s from most estates so far, including this one.

  • Steak House Wine deluxe. I want to give it a hundred point score based on what I paid for it almost a decade ago, but I can’t. For me the alcohol is a bit overpowering. Takes out the fruit. Elegant, silky, but the 15.2% shows a bit too much. Paired very well with a fillet mignon. Is it good, of course. This is obviously a high end production, there’s no doubt about that. This is very powerful, very dark ‘cult, type Napa cab. Seductive, I want to say, but your date may fall asleep..or pass out.

  • Deep inky purple color. Very fragrant nose of cedar, baked blackberries, and vanilla. Full body, medium-to-medium-low acid, and mouthcoating medium-plus tannins. Dark berries, cedar, and milk chocolate on the palate. Really pushes the ripeness scale but somehow manages to stay in balance. A crowd pleaser, but with good depth.

  • Into the decanter with a small pour to test out on open … plenty of bubbles indicate still a lot of tannins, runny legs, dark as night with Crimson edges

Perfumed nose with crushed raspberries and crushed raspberries, both red and black

The pallet is locked down, but early showing of black olive and faint red and black berry fruits, but muted, needs air time…if the fruit becomes unlocked, I have high hopes

    2.25 hrs

Still somewhat locked down. Disappointed to say the least. Lovely nose, but the fruit only pops out after significant swirling, 90 as is, 95ish after swirling

    3 hrs

Finally opened up. Same notes as before but now amplified. 95 and holding, with room to run up in the future. Whatever started as a pissed off teenager grew into a poised young adult.

Hold for 2-3 yrs or air out for 3+ hrs now. Add this to the list of recalcitrant 2013s

  • Ok round two but this time focused on the ‘optimal window’ and it is very good but not great. Same notes as yesterday, tannins are really silky, but with more focus on the wine tonight the slightly bitter note surfaces. This brings it back down a point to 93.
