  • A blend of Chardonnay (50%), Pinot Meunier (40%) and Pinot Noir (10%).

Medium-deep lemon yellow color. Very robust and expressive nose with aromas of pronounced autolytic toast, nutty tones, some smoke, a little bit of burnt sugar, light bruised apple notes and a hint of roasted walnuts. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and steely on the palate with flavors of nutty autolysis, bruised apple, some apple peel bitterness, a little bit of tart quince-driven white fruit, light autolytic nutty tones, a hint of smoke and a sappy touch of almost unripe greenness. The wine is high in acidity with quite ample and creamy mousse. The finish is long and mineral with flavors of tart green apples, some steely minerality, a little bit of nutty autolysis, light toasty tones, a hint of chalky mineral bitterness and a developed touch of creaminess.

A very developed yet still - at the same time - very fresh and lively Champagne with really heavy autolytic overall character. Although the wine retains a remarkable amount of bright fruit, even now at 30 years of age, the very noticeably nutty and toasty autolytic character strips some of the freshness fruit the fruit, making the wine feel just ridiculously toasty. Furthermore, the fruit retains a somewhat lean, green-ish edge, which clashes slightly with the vinous richness the wine has developed over the years. All in all, this is impressive and a very nicely developed Champagne, but with subtle blemishes that keep it from coming across as truly great. Although not the most amazing old Champagne out there, it is nevertheless a very fine, exquisite and thoroughly enjoyable effort.
