  • Alas a TCA tainted bottle, which is unfortunate as the underlying material was showing quality that is similar to the 1987 I had about a month ago.

  • Decanted; Private Preserve after Day 1

    N: DEFINITELY an earthy component (POSS corked) -- & I got NONE of that when 1st pouring into the decanter!

    P: Med body; LOTS of "frt" met by a tangy acidity which transitions into quite a LONG finish.

    =====

    Pros re corked: All 3 of us tasting mentioned a "mustiness" @ some time or the other. Also, parts of the mid-P/early finish showed a harshness that seemed incongruous with the overall frt.

    Cons re corked: A youthful color with BEAUTIFUL "frt", VERY good acidity, & resolved tannins, + quite LONG.

    Could go either way: The mustiness was strongest soon after pouring, then tending to resolve at least somewhat aromatically. On Day 2 it showed eucalyptus, poss mint, which I began to think was playing into what I'd described as mustiness?

    ∑: A confounding wine that I can't even BEGIN to "rate". :(

  • Dark garnet red. Fairly aromatic old-fashionedly ripe red currant and chaparral aromas. Tart ripe fruit is surprising in its staying power. Excellent length, with some finishing perfume. The structure here grows with air such that it eventually fills out to fully support the aforementioned fruit-driven flavors. However, a truly subtle but distinctly odd fishiness contaminates the picture. On the 2nd day this lost a bit of aromatic intensity but none of its persistence of fruit.

  • A surprising amount of fruit in the nose and palate mixed with some cigar box and earth. Not terribly complex, but an elegant compliment to the peppercorn pork loin.
