TTTG (Loire blind tasting): A steely front eventually reveals some tropical fruit, underripe husk cherries, and herbs. Excellent structure. Lovely wine.

Another really impressive bottle from Boulay in the last few weeks. This doesn't show as well right after opening, but takes some time to develop with air. Initially it comes across a bit austere and aromatically quiet next to the Vacheron, with lots of briny and chalky mineral notes on the nose, but not a whole lot else. With more air though it fleshes out as a core of ripe citrus fruit develops, while the aromatics become a bit more flamboyant and herbal. No shortage of acidity here, and fantastic balance.

It still has a light straw color. Aromas of lemon, orange blossoms, white flowers, some apricot, chalk, minerals and a hint of ginger. Similar flavors, along with something like a light orange liqueur. Creamy and rich in the mouth. Nice acid and balance. A long kind of sweetish orange liqueur-like finish. Drinking at its apogee now. A very nice pairing with scallops.

(Gerard Boulay Monts Damnes Sancerre) #1; COLOR-light golden; NOSE-really pretty Kiwi component; some creaminess (like a White Burgundy - nice); grass clippings; TASTE-completely over-the-top and powerful; very masculine; very profound & complex on your palate; yet the silkiness & structure that you'd look for in $50-$100 White Burgundy; extremely elegant; beautiful apricot & dried pear components; very silky; downright delicious; one of the best Sancerre's I've had in a long time; Spectacular; DS-91; GV-93
(BOULAY Monts Damnes SANCERRE) Monts Damnes Dear Friends, A small parcel of this just became available directly from Boulay’s cellar and I jumped at the opportunity. This is one of the more impressive examples of Sancerre from the 2005 vintage and it may outlive many grand cru white Burgundies from the same year. This wine is the frame that the Comtesse is culled from but in 2005 there wasn’t much to cull - in fact, the wines show more than a passing resemblance. This is a serious wine that deserves its place in the hierarchy of Europe’s best. A nice send-off as I head back to the US: VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for expression of vintage and layered terroir at the very top end. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY directly from the winery cellar: 2005 Gerard Boulay Sancerre “Monts Damnes” Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Loire9580
