  • Château Moulin Riche, Saint Julien, 2017: The first, 2011 kosher run of this wine symbolized Royal Wine’s return to serious kosher winemaking with a beautiful overachieving wine despite a below average vintage. The 2013 is one of very few decent red Bordeaux for the « black vintage ». The 2015, while excellent, is a lighter, softer wine than I had expected for the vintage. This 2017 however shows that Léoville Poyferré and its sister vineyard Moulin Riche were qualitatively not impacted whatsoever by the late frost and bumpy climatic conditions during the growing season. Deep purple towards garnet in color. On the nose, ripe blueberries, black currants, dried violets, cigar box, as well as tar and light pipe smoke. Full-bodied, medium-plus intensity, with a velvety, almost creamy texture. On the palate, juicy, fleshy blueberries and blackberries, followed by notes of black licorice, graphite, wet earth, nutmeg, clove, luxurious, full-bodied Cuban cigar, medium-plus acidity, with generous fine grained tannins coating the mouth and the gums highlighting notes of dark chocolate covered cherries on a long, plush and elegant finish. Wow. Quite possibly the best kosher Moulin Riche yet. 13.5% Abv. Drink 2025-2035. 93-94
