Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): From the Dégustation Secrète pack. Very high acid, and far too thin for my taste. Reminds me a bit of a 2011 Champagne what with its weediness and lack of palate presence. A swing and a miss whatever this was (which just filling in what I thought was the weakest champagne in the set was the 2007 Cumières). A big disappointment at the reveal (and honestly quite shocking too).

Got a slight pop, with fine bubbles. Color is golden. Toffee, caramel, vanilla notes. It is sweeter than I expected. Very long finish. Reminds me of old tawney port without the alcohol. Lovely old champagne.

Unfortunately this one was tainted. Cork didn't pop however lots of bubbles on the pour and plenty of fizz left in it. Immediately the nose presented with intense wet cardboard, the taste was *just* ok but certainly not drinkable. Bought at an auction. Win some you lose some :)

The mature notes are coming out in this bottle, rich tart tatin, ripe slices of golden delicious apple, earthy leafy apple peel notes. Lemon curd through the finish. Though the last bottle suggested another six years or so, this one says “drink the rest within two years” to me.

Toasty vanilla on nose and palate with a very long finish. Paired with a spinach and bacon quiche the acidity was perfect to compliment the rich flavors. It was still good the second day with the loss of carbonation allowing the chardonnay to be revealed but could not detect the pinot noir.

(Duval-Leroy Champagne Brut Millésimé) Light lemon yellow color with lots of tiny bubbles; very yeasty, light white chocolate, very tart apple nose; tasty, tangy, maturing, tart lemon, mineral, lightly savory palate with lively acidity and appealing texture; medium-plus finish 91+ points
