  • NC Cindy Tasting, Pre-Christmas 2011 (NC Wino's Stately Wayne Manor): I'm told this wine is Sauvignon blanc, but you wouldn't know from looking at it. This is extremely dark amber yellow, and strictly by eye looks like a mistake - perhaps a white wine that was forgotten in oak barrels for a couple years too long. On the nose, there's no mistaking that this is quite oxidized. The opening scents are almonds, pecan shells, pistachios, and Ivory dish soap. There is a nice shot of white plum on the tail end, though, to give it a little brightness. On the palate there is quite a lot of petrol, with a corresponding oily mouthfeel. There is a little bit of muted citrus on the mid-palate, and quite a bit of alcohol (listed at 14.9% ABV), but it is surprisingly well-integrated. The wine is very smooth and quite herbal in character, with a distinctive note of dolmathes. The finish is long and on the whole the wine strikes me as being very well-made. This isn't for everyone, and it reminds me quite a bit of the Lopez de Heredia Tondonia, except that I like the balance and character of this wine quite a lot more. I was in the minority view, though, and I think most folks were somewhat disappointed. It was a very interesting experience for all, though, and I understand the production is tiny, so thanks very much to David T for bringing it to share with us.

  • 12/16 NC Cindy Tasting (Raleigh, NC): Lots of nuts and petrol coming through. Just a hint of grass towards the end was the only sign that this is a sauvignon blanc. Intriguing wine.

  • The nose of this wine had a fairly strong nuttiness to it. After noticing that aroma, others in the group did point out that the color of the wine was slightly oxidized. The palate had some citrus flavors, and maybe just a touch of sweetness, but the nut flavors were also present here. At times, this seemed very Sherry-like to me. This was interesting, and I was glad that there were 4 of us focusing on this at the same time, because talking about it in a group made it more fun to taste. There was a lot going on here, but it still came off as just a bit strange to me.

Rockss and Fruit

(Scholium Project Farina Vineyards Cena 2) This is a really delicious and unique interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc. This was a mix of clean and botryized Sauvignon Blanc. This version of the wine spends three more months in barrel than its companion the Cena Trimalchionis. A wonderful wine with huge tropical fruit flavors, lovely minerality and wonderfully delicous and pure botryized flavors. All differnet types of citrus fruits with a whiplash of acidity but all kept sodt by the extra three months in oak. I find it a touch softer then the Cena. Just as good . . .just a little different. Not in B Minor but D Minor.
