A trip to South Africa's Coastal Region with Reni, Rainer and Bert. Day 12, Stellenbosch and Camps Bay (Cape Town). The 200ha Kleine Zalze Estate has 110 ha under wine. Kleine Zalze uses both estate grown grapes (roughly 1/3 of the production) and purchased grapes (roughly 2/3 of the production). We tasted Kleine Zalze's wines at the winery's tasting room, with our charismatic host Wayne van Rooyen.
About 92% Shiraz, 6% Mourvédre and 1% Viognier. Aged for 14 months in 2nd and 3rd fill barrels. Mixed berries (mostly dark), lactic notes, vegetal notes and spices. Light- to medium-bodied, fresh and fruity, with lively acidity, slightly drying tannin and average length. A lighter style. Serve slightly chilled, with BBQ on hot summer days.

Popped from a half bottle. Ripe dark fruit on the nose. Rather full bodied, robust and smooth, showing ripe dark fruit/berries with gentle tannins and a bit of heat on the finish. A hint of licorice as well. A pleasant quaffer with good value.
