Chateau de Lamarque 1996: Better than the 95 but no way near the top. One of the few greats thing about this wine is the balanced acidity which keeps it elegant. Some charming aromas of roasted coffee, dark ripe fruit, spices and butter, but falls short on intensity and length.

Late Dec 2002: dark red color; slow legs; weak aroma of black and red berries and lots of oak in the nose; much more wood and a wall of tannins in the mouth.

Mid Dec 2004: dark violet color; very intense cassis aroma for the first 5 minutes, suddenly shut down; went superficially, uninspired.
