  • A deep ruby that manages to just be this side of translucent in the glass. Not reticent at all, the nose is all about cherries, strawberries and other red fruit, mingling with leather, tobacco, sage, thyme and wet dirt. An initial burst of berries in the mouth seems expected, but then it wraps itself up in a complicated interplay of the fruit, leather, more tobacco and herbs. It's not delineated at all on the palate, but somehow more interesting because of it. A lingering parting shot of raspberry urges you to head back to the glass for another sip. My kind of Rioja!

  • a very enjoyable old-fashioned rioja with full berry flavor and some earthiness in there as well. 90. this tasted better after an hour of decanting.
