Wine Box Burgundy portfolio tasting (Wine Box warehouse): Butter and honey, very ripe tropical and stone fruit, toast, vanilla, huge and broad Palate is smooth, leaner than feared, warm but not as much as the 14.8%, lime/citrus acidity trying to offer some balance, overripe fruit, caramel, vanilla, full body and long finish

Retail $40. Big. Ass. Bottle. Under Cork. While it seems as though the producers of big California Chardonnay are diminishing, there are a few holders-on to the style that was in vogue for a solid decade or two. Add this Panthera to the list. Aged for 18-months in French oak (35% new), this might not be as oaky as some on the market, but make no mistake, there is plenty of wood. Don't get me wrong, though, I like an oaky Chard on occasion and this wine suits me just fine. Bold lemon curd and, well, oak on the nose with hints of green apple and white flower. The palate is what one might expect from such a nose: rich. layered, bold, and, well, oaky.

Heavy, opulent, fat, nice nose, lot‘s of oak. Good with food but too heavy to drink just on its own. I expected a leaner, more Burgundy-like wine.
