A modern Greek wine, modern in a good way that does away wit the rustic side of local grapes ( here a blend of Mavrodaphne and Mavro Kalavrintino) and with a good helping of oak . Smooth, round and drinks very nicely but along the way of polishing the rustic side of the Greek local winemaking also lost any feel for typicity and the result is a well made generic but very good wine. Not that we fault it for it and was very good just lacked any special side to it. A solid 90-91

The tasting notes were mostly consistent with the previous tasting in March, 2020.
2013 Domain Mega Spileo Grand Cave Red Cuvée red was ripe, earthy and complex. The Greek native red blend was medium ruby in colour with traces of fine sediments. Freshly uncorked, it displayed aromas of ripe dark plum, dark cherries, ripe blackberries and violets, followed by liqourice, toast and graphite. With two hours of aeration, complexities of coffee, earth and mushroom developed. On the palate, the wine was dry and full-bodied, with medium-high level of balanced acidity and medium level of well-integrated tannin. Intense flavours of ceder wood, smoke, Assam black tea and saline minerality lingered in a long complex finish.
From the information on the back label, the blend consisted of 60% Mavrodafine and 40% Mavro Kalavritino. The vines were cordon-trained on an incline of sand and clay, at an elevation from 780 to 880 meters in Achaia, Peloponnisos in Greece. The wine was aged in a combination of 85% French oak 15% American oak for 31 months, followed by 24 months of in-bottle aging. 10,000 bottles were produced in the 2013 vintage. The production could be traced back for 500 years when the vineyard was used by Holy Monastery of Mega Spileo Grand Cave.
