Still going strong, with surprising freshness and acidity. Barely browning on the edges of the glass. Very good and I would guess it still has another 5-8 years left.

Pop and pour. Some ashy notes to start, then cigar smoke, tobacco, soft cherry, and a touch of olive. No rocks funk present (maybe that was the ash to start?). On the palate, soft acid, almost flabby, but more cigar ash and black pepper. Tannin attenuated. Not bad, but a bit past prime, and definitely a disappointment for the price. Glad I made space on their mailing list for someone more excited about the wines...

Dinner at Jade Court (Chicago, IL): Cayuse is a producer that I've never crossed paths with, so I was extremely happy to see a bottle at dinner tonight. This is a wine that definitely respects the grape (despite some fears of mine that the wines would be jammy and too ripe). The nose has hints of green olive, but mostly goes more towards the black pepper and smoked meat aspects of the grape. There's a slight hint of bloodiness here as well. The palate is, admittedly, a little more fruity and jammy than I'd like, but it's still very nicely restrained and overall this is not an over-the-top kind of wine at all. I'm more than pleased with this; I'm not sure if I'd prefer this over, say a Graillot Crozes for half the price, but it's definitely good syrah.

From the winery Ex-Cellar. Past it’s peak. Fairly green and syrupy. Hints of a previously interesting wine but challenging to appreciate in its old age.

Slightly too dense/syrupy for my taste.
