Drunk over two evenings with beef steak, then chilli con carne. This is a big cabernet with lots of ripe fruit and fairly smooth on the palate. But it's fairly straightforward and one dimensional, didn't develop or change, even on second night. Quite acceptable, but not memorable.

Stelvin closure. Very definite purple. Nose of blackcurrant leaf, liquorice and eucalyptus. Big on the palate - cassis, coffee with a menthol (or is it alcohol) kick. Full on Cabernet - not complex but absolutely what it says on the tin.

The back label of this value-oriented ($16 in Ontario) Cab from the generally very fine Glenelly tells you there will be "a complex and subtle spectrum of aromas" that includes coffee beans, mint, blackcurrant, cigar box, cedar, and dried cherry. Well, fine. The initial nose, right upon opening, is quite intense, showing coffee, dark chocolate, and dark berries, and with time there's also cassis, menthol, minerals, and herbs, plus some brown spice. It's actually a very minerally, herbal wine. There's complexity, to be sure, but not much subtlety. It packs a punch on the nose, while the flavours, replays of the aromas bathed in excess bitterness, are rather disjointed, and the soft structure suggests time won't do much to bring out anything else, though maybe a couple more years would help with integration, mellowing out the harshness on the palate. As it is, it's fine for the price, but there's a huge step up to the better Glenelly wines without much of an increase in price.

Needs at least an hour in a decanter to smooth out, very nice after that.

A delicious wine. Similar notes as last time, however, this has put on some weight and flesh mid palate. Ready to go now and for the next 5-8 years.
