Deep golden colored now; acidity keeps it vibrant to go with its richness and generosity; the sweet vs savory tension is still the highlight but it’s clearly crossed its peak and will glide downward at a glacial pace. One of the greatest value buys in my decades of wine enjoyment.

One of my favorite German Riesling producers “back in the day”, this particular wine is like visiting an old friend. Further maturity in it reveals a slightly increased sense of ripeness which pulls overall characteristics just a tad more to the sweet side of the classic sweet vs savory tension commonly found in fine German Riesling. Nonetheless, this is a classic and beautifully mature wine.

Seems like age has finally caught up with this bottle. PnP, chilled. the color was a clear medium gold-amber. Lots of apricot and honey notes on the nose. These both follow nicely on to the palate where they are joined by some pineapple, and regrettably, some woody notes that only increase with time. The acidity keeps the fruit and residual sugar in check, but those woody notes detract greatly from our enjoyment. I would suggest drinking sooner rather than later.

Opened for Josh's senior recital day and Chicken Tikka Masala. This wine can now drink itself at 21 years old. What a superb vintage the '01 continues to be. Nice light yellow. Mellow and pure - brilliant acidity with lemon chiffon, pear and peach. With more air and warming, the lusher flavors come out...more melons, round peach, honeydew. Quite lovely at this age.
