(HUBER Alte Setzen) 2006 Austria Dear Friends, A few words of advice: do not travel to Europe the day or two before Thanksgiving - you get stuck in the insanity of pre-holiday domestic travel and the security check-points are backed up so far it almost seems like you could walk faster. So, what do I do? Travel to Europe the day or two before Thanksgiving....maybe I could listen to my own advice next time. All of the waiting around gives me time to type this entire offer, one key at a time, on my Blackberry and I even have time to edit it (the size of this offer puts me in the Blackberry typing hall of fame - complete with cut and paste reviews form my minuscule browser). Maybe slowing down and waiting can be a good thing sometimes... The good news is that this confirmation came well ahead of last week’s Tanzer report on Austria or there was no chance to acquire any of the wines - they are made in such limited amounts that it’s almost a home project of sorts (we also offered the 2006 wines of Markus Huber last spring before anyone cared and they are rewarding our loyalty). To be brief and because I’m trying to type this while dragging my laptop bag and suitcase with me, these are absolutely scintillating wines from one of the finest modern-day vintages in the history of Austrian winemaking. Think 2001 Germany, 1990 Alsace and 1959 Vouvray all wrapped into one vintage and you will get the mental image of how special these wines are. I’ve championed this vintage for the past year or so and the wines are only getting better in bottle - a sumptuous thought. I’ve tried to include something for everyone below, in all price ranges, and they are all of equal worth in their respective price-levels. Please know that these are very limited wines with marginal or nonexistent distribution so please be patient with allocations. If you enjoy dry white wine of character, intensity, nobility and terroir so biting, stony and unctuous it bombards the insides of your mouth like a shotgun blast, dive in with abandon. If you are into ageing wine, all on these have the chance to age for many years, even decades. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for reflection on an outstanding vintage, crystal clear clarity and rarity: ALL ARE DIRECTLY FROM THE SOURCE with perfect provenance: 2006 Markus Huber Gruner Veltliner Obere Steigen DAC (this is just a great everyday wine of character - the vintage elevates the result - a stock-up wine that will be very pleasing to almost all) 2006 Markus Huber Gruner Veltliner "Alte Setzen" (reload on this wine that has become a fan favorite since we offered it last spring) 2006 Markus Huber Gruner Veltliner Berg (this is incredible stuff - Pichler fans pay attention....) 2006 Markus Huber Riesling Eiswein (375ml) (I’m on my third bottle of this and I still can’t believe they make this from grapes - if molten lava could be light as a feather it would be this wine) All are EXTREMELY LIMITED and made in very small amounts - please be patent with final allocations (thank you in advance).
