Still relatively opaque black cherry color with a developed mahogany hue. Attractive, somewhat developed and slightly earthy nose that reminds me of aged Nebbiolo. Aromas of wizened, slightly raisiny fruit, some earthy spices, a little bit of bloody meat, light sweeter notes of ripe black cherries, a sanguine hint of iron and a touch of old leather. The wine is firm, sinewy and quite acid-driven on the palate with a medium body and developed flavors of wizened cranberries and crowberries, some raisiny tones, a little bit of earthy spice, light gamey tones, a hint of sour cherry bitterness, a touch of rusted iron and lifted nuance of mint. The fruit seems to be peaking now, but the structure is still remarkably tightly-knit with the high acidity and still quite assertive and relatively grippy tannins. The finish is dry, wonderfully crunchy and quite tannic with complex, developed flavors of raisiny dark fruits, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of leather, light crowberry tones, a hint of gamey umami and a sanguine touch of iron.

A very lovely and wonderfully developed Freisa that is peaking now. Aromatically there are lots of similarities to an aged Barolo. The overall feel is beautifully matured, yet still remarkably stern and structure-driven at the same time. It's quite rare an opportunity to taste a Freisa at its peak, since these wines tend to be drunk in their youth, before they get to show their best. Structurally this wine could age many years - perhaps even decades - more, but I doubt the fruit will hold that long. Probably best to drink now or in the next handful of years. Outrageous value at 15€.
