  • Return to Willamette; 7/2/2023-7/8/2023 (Portland & Willamette): Off the wine list at the Jory. This was good but we didn’t really give it enough time to find itself. More of a pnp. Enjoyed over lunch with a Willamette Riesling and a French Champagne. I liked the flavors here but didn’t get much past the first level.

  • Opened for a Zoom call with Marcus and Megan, I took a quick sip, and then gave the wine about 3 hours of air (but did not decant) before pouring a full glass.

    I do love the color of the Goodfellow Pinots, as with this bottle they are often they are a luminescent ruby, giving off visual energy. That is followed by an aromatic combination of crisp red fruit, floral tones and fresh herbs. That combination is reflected on the palate, but it has a finely layered effect. I initially described it as "mille feuille", but later on I arrived at "mica" as the layers are nearly clear, one to another. It's a fascinating sensation that was initially tough to get my head around. There is notable tannin in the wine, so with its depth of fruit there is plenty of room for at least mid-term aging. Some of the layers may fuse together over time, making for a more cohesive sense to the wine, but I am very happy that I caught it at this early stage.

    -- tasted blind alongside 2 other Goodfellow Pinots ('18 Fir Crest Block 8 & '15 Fir Crest); this was labelled as wine #2 --

    NOSE: Day 1: tight and red-fruited; initially indistinguishable from the '18 Fir Crest Block 8. Day 2: raspberry Twizzlers and rose. Day 3 pretty tight.

    BODY: garnet color of shallow depth (same as '18 Fir Crest Block 8; lighter than '15 Fir Crest); medium-light bodied.

    TASTE: Day 1: very tight; tannic; faintly red-fruited; faint mineral, came forward a bit from the 20 min. mark to the 45 min. mark; turning oaky at 85 min. mark. Day 2: pointed/exact/precise; red berries/red currant; crab apple; much prefer this on Day 2 over the '18 Fir Crest Block 8 on Day 2 --- damn!, this is good today!; high acid; clean, bitter pomegranate. Day 3: tart, medium-light red fruits; slightly bitter; stony mineral. Day 5: some oxidation now. 13.3% alc.

  • Light ruby color. Lots of cranberry with a hint of spice. Light/medium finish.
