Community Tasting Notes (2)

  • One of Daniel Johnes' blinds. Definitely drinks younger than 61, but definitely over the hill. Would have loved to have a 1er or grand cru of this vintage, since this definitely had some staying power.

  • Birthday wine.
Out of control. I bought it at the domaine last June after asking JT what he'd recommend and be willing to sell me. He boxed it and I put it directly in a Eurocave when I arrived home so it never saw the light of day for 50 years. The power of a village-level wine after 50 years was unbelievable. I thought it perfectly displayed Gevrey terroir. Her Royal Highness was misty-eyed, "it just smells like there."
NO oxidation or fading of fruit. Lots of really dark cherry with a little Cassis. Incredibly some notes of fresh frais de bois. Light clove with a big punch of anise seed. Saddle leather. Dark caramel with a little salinity (soy sauce). Unbelievable power still. So so good. There's no way to assign a numerical score to this; what's the frame of reference? I can't even figure out how to place it on a WOTY list. It really just stands alone.
