  Herzog, Special Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill, Warnecke Vineyard, 1993: This is the inaugural Herzog Chalk Hill. Starting with the next vintage, 1994, it was made into its own series, the Special Edition with its iconic narrow vertical label. This is a bottle that was perfectly stored in a private cellar since release, and which I was able to purchase for a very attractive price. I suspected the price was reflecting the fact that a wine this old would be hit and miss. The retailer that sold it to me tasted before listing it for sale, and had an off bottle. I took my chance while knowing the risk, and it paid off! Not such a big surprise considering that most Herzog Special Reserve Alexander Valley and Special Edition Chalk Hill have a proven track record of aging 20+ years in the best vintages. Deep cherry red in color, slightly bricking at the rim, and throwing some good sediment. On the nose, crushed blackberries, wild blueberries, wet forest floor, and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, with a generous, velvety mouthfeel. On the palate, juicy black and blue fruit, followed by rich earthy notes, nutmeg and cinnamon, medium acidity, with plush, integrating, grainy tannins, and notes of sweet tobacco, more earth and spices lingering on a very long and mouth-filling finish. Incredible such a 27 years old, mevushal wine is so good and still at peak. Memorable. 13.5% Abv. Drink up. 95
