Quick note from an impeccable cellar. 1.5l format. Drake was an apple orchard prior to John Dyson's 1999 purchase and conversion to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyard is contiguous to the Russian River on one side and surrounded by hillsides of redwoods on the remainder. The cool - to downright cold - winds of the Pacific flow up the river past the vineyard and keep this property cooler than other parts of the Russian River Valley AVA.
This wine is quite good. Color is excellent too. Nose and palate of yellow apple and pear mostly. Also noticed a bit of forest and a wood spices, and savory tarragon. Use of only French oak provides spice and toasty flavors, the latter of which is only slightly amplified in the bottle by reasonable bottle age. Enjoy now for the next four years or so. 93+
(Served with a simple ham and white bean bean soup plus toasted bread. An excellent combo.)
