  • File under, I-never-thought-I’d-say-it: Barthod that’s nearly ready and a 2005 to boot! Granted one doesn’t hear a lot about easy drinkin’ Barthod nor smooth examples of 2005 Côte d’Or reds, but I’ll be goddamned, this Bourgogne Les Bons Bâtons is quite tasty, given some air and some time on that decanter. The 05 Bons Bâtons has a pale ruby robe with some bricking. The nose is a bit fuhschtinkin’ on opening, with oxidative, rusty cherry compote dominating, yet the palate is succulent and redolent of sour cherry, red raspberry, and red currant flavors belying the nose. A quick decant off the sediment corrects things with the nose freshening up to reveal more red fruits, rose petal, and raspberry character. This is still has a bit left in the tank for a 17(!)-year-old Bourgogne, but Barthod is glacial in its maturation, so this jibes with the vintage and grower. That said, there’s enough verve and concentration here to shine with a fennel-crusted pork chop and Madeira glazed cippolini. I’ve got a couple more bottles of this and I’d be inclined to finish them off over the next 2-3 years.

  • Sadly, this bottle wasn't showing well - either a flawed bottle, or more likely (I fear), past it's best.

    As a consequence, not rated.

  • Definitely impressed by the structure and depth of this for an AOC wine. Never would have guessed this wasn't at least village level. Deep black cherry fruit and burg earth. Still very much alive. However the acid was so high it was a bit distracting. More than a glass felt too much. Not sure if therefore this was a slightly off bottle. But the underlying quality was good.

  • Delicious.
Surprisingly powerful, dark, rich, and full flavored; chewy but resolved tannins, with plenty of fruit still present; wow.

There may be 5 years of life remaining, for those fortunate enough to still have bottles remaining in their cellar. I do!!!

    Rated 2 on a scale of -1 to +3.

  • This is the drinking beautifully now. All the rough edges in previous bottles are gone. High pitched red berry fruit with a touch of violet on the backend.

Rockss and Fruit

(Ghilslaine Barthod Bourgogne Rouge "Les Bons Batons") Acid-driven, tart and hot and never really came together over the next four days. Too minerally and not enough fruit. I love Barthod, but don't get me wrong, this was a clunker of an '05. It was long on the finish but that neccesarily was not a good thing for this wine. I have one more bottle which I'll forget about for five years and see where that takes me. Hopefully some place better than the previous bottle.

Burgundy-Report

(Barthod Ghislaine Bourgogne Rouge) Medium, medium-plus cherry-red. Slightly volatile and high-toned, but these notes mainly disappear with swirling to leave a deeper, cream-edged base - it’s then quite impressive. Fresh in the mouth, dense and slightly furry with very good fruit that follows through into the finish. Very impressive - average 2004 villages quality here - but I’d still mainly drink over the next 2-3 years.
