The Denogent Vieilles Vignes Chardonnays tend to dramatically improve in quality at around 13 years old, so with great hopes I opened the 2005 and drank it slowly over a week to give it time to fully evolve. The nose is distinctively perfumed with flowers, geranium, and allspice. The sip rolls in with a caressing and mouth coating texture that was not in the young wine, and adds lively lime acidity typical for grapes grown on slate soil . The swallow and finish provide a wonderfully integrated and throat coating chorus of all the earlier tastes. Overall, aging very well but still has room for further improvement by adding a more layered complexity.

Begins with a translucent light gold color that has no hint of oxidation, only perfumed aromas of honeysuckle and lime. The sip features a lush and juicy texture with a concentrated lime taste that both coats and caresses the mouth. The swallow begins with a spike of lime acidity followed by a lime zest taste of the peel. Overall, a fine example of how Burgundy regions outside of the famous Cote d'Or limestone escarpment can make Chardonnays just as good, here from a rare vineyard with slate soil.

Lovely mature chardonnay, still enough fruit and acidity left in combination with nice secondary tones and medium finish.
